Senri Hirano's "Basho Tabidachi" is on display here.
Although accounts differ on the start of Basho's journey, he is said to have spent a week writing poems at Susano Shrine before saying farewell to his apprentices and crossing the Senjo Ohashi Bridge with Sora.
The poem he wrote at this time is "Departing spring. Birds cry. In fishes' eyes are tears." The travel garb both of them wore at this time is thought to have been black dyed garments, but Basho's actually featured a faint colored pattern.
The artist pictured Basho standing facing the Sumida River as he wrote a poem as Sora sat on a rock in the road and waited, and it seemed only natural for a frog to be there.
There are also 4 other works displayed.
