Susanoo Shrine is the villiage shrine largest in Arakawa City by area. At the Tenno Festival (Registered Intangible Folk Cultural Property) which is celebrated in June, vigorous mikoshifuri (shaking a portable shrine from side to side) is the highlight of the festival. Held only by two poles or carrying sticks, the mikoshi (a portable shrine) is shaken from side to side, the phoenix on the roof almost touching the ground. There is also the “Oku no Hosomichi” Yatate Hajime no Ku monument (Ward Designated Cultural Property) of Matsuo Obashō (a Haiku Master of the Edo period), which was built by writers who gathered at Senju-juku in Showa 3 (1820).
