This is the first bridge which Tokugawa Ieyasu built in Edo. This area was the northern gateway to Edo and Natsuo Bashō travelled to Ōshu from here. It is depicted in the "Senjyu no Ōhashi" of the One Hundred Famous Views of Edo by Utagawa Hiroshige.
The bridge was made an iron bridge in Showa 2 (1927) and is the oldest existing tied arch bridge in Japan.
