Ena Watanabe's "Appearance of Tokyo 2020 ~pop city~" is on display at Arakawa Sogo Sports Center.
Explanation of work
The theme of this work is love for your hometown, and it's an abstract expression of the place where I was born and grew up. This motif, Tokyo, is a city which has many core functions for Japan, and I feel a sense of nostalgia for it as my hometown alongside my impression of it as a place where numerous people are constantly in vigorous activity and you can experience changes over time. Highrise buildings may seem like cold, inorganic walls at first glance, but there are tons of people on the other side. It's kind of similar to the way that now, thanks to advances in IT, there can be an unknown number of complete strangers on the other side of your screen through social media and the Internet. Although Tokyo has a large population, I intentionally avoided people for this peace, instead depicting personifications of the culture, environment, and distinctive character of each region through onomatopoeia-like elements. I used traditional metal carving techniques to give shape to the surface of the metal material, and I hope this work will provide an opportunity for viewers to let their minds wander and explore modern Tokyo scenery.
