Mao Kanai's "tempus" is on display Yuyaku Koyake Community Center.
Explanation of work
The word "tempus" is Latin for "time."
I feel that the things mankind takes away from the natural world are not the environment but more like time itself. I find beauty not in changing the environment but instead in the forms of the living things which evolved over long years into their current bodies. Even if mankind dies out, the natural world will continue to move through the four seasons, and the cycle will keep going to thousands and even tens of thousands of years. This is a grander flow of time than we have in our world. I created this work in the image of a ship sailing on the currents of a neverending ocean of time.
I used woodcarving to create the world on land and black lacquer with gold and silver for expression to create the ocean world. This work expresses the vast natural world as a small boat 60 cm long.
