It is said that the bodies of Shin-Yoshihara’s (a red-light district) female prostitutes who were sacrificed by the Great Earthquake of Ansei 2 (1855) were thrown in, and hence is also called the “Nagekomidera” (roughly meaning “Throw-in Temple”). Within the precincts, there is the “Shin-Yoshihara Soureitō” which conveys the sad events of the time, as well as a monument inscribed with a poem by Nagai Kafū.
