There are tombs of Shishi (roughly meaning "Men of High Purpose", they were a group of Japanese political activists of the late Edo period) such as Yoshida Shōin and Hashimoto Sanai, as well as tombs of Nezumi Kōzōjirōkichi (a notorious thief of the Edo period) , Kataoka Naojirō (an infamous criminal), and Takahashi Oden (known for killing a man and the last woman to be executed by beheading in Japan). The "Kaitai Shinsho" (roughly meaning "New Text on Anatomy") was translated by Sugita Genpaku, Maeono Ryozawa and others from Dutch to Japanese, brought about upon performing autopsies on executed criminals. To commemorate the birthplace of modern medicine, a monument was built.
