Artist's Statement
I created a coconut crab with tattoos on the theme of evolution. The idea came from imagining a snow crab living in human society and learning about civilization.
Snow crabs are crustaceans classified as Malacostraca Decapoda Coenobitidae who have shells like the commonly known Diogenidae; however, through the course of development, they leave their shell and live solely with their body.
The snow crab who acquired the tattoo culture that is cultivated in human society encourages himself to live without his shell by expressing it in his tattoos.
There are many reasons behind tattoos, such as an individual's thoughts or religion, etc.; there are also people who get tattoos in order to look strong. I felt that I could overlap the meanings on the point of evolution of both tattoo culture and snow crabs wishing to be strong.
By assembling various designs on his body, the snow crab strengthens himself from the inside out and evolves; I hope depicting this gives strength to us who live in modern society.
