Cycling through Shioiri Park
Shioiri Park is a great place to take a break from the hustle and bustle of central Tokyo. And cycling is an excellent way to get around. The whole Arakawa City neighborhood is easily bikeable.
Arakawa City, perfect for cyclists
Smartphone apps that offer access to bicycle rentals can be used in English. So download an app and start looking for a nearby bike station. Since you'll find one or two near Shioiri Park, you might consider starting or ending your cycling journey here.
You're sure to enjoy the well-maintained bike paths alongside the Sumida River. A cool breeze off the water and peaceful surroundings contribute to a very relaxing experience.
As you ride, look out for one landmark in particular: TOKYO SKYTREE. At 634 m, it is the tallest freestanding broadcasting tower in the world and a symbol of hyper-modern Tokyo. While visiting the tower itself can be time-consuming because of the long lines, Shioiri Park features various spots that offer a view of this Tokyo icon minus the bustling crowds.
Since bike paths extend all over the park, you can ride quite a distance. The service center has bathrooms and a water fountain, as well as information about the area: a good opportunity to rest and refuel.
Visiting Shioiri Park
The park is the largest in Arakawa City. Its other features include tennis courts (available for a fee), an herb garden, a fun playground, grassy areas, and two large fields. Locals often use the fields to play soccer, softball, and other sports.
The grass is perfect for a picnic. As you sit on a lush green bank looking out over the broad river, the striking urban scenes you'll notice on the far side include an expressway, with tiny traffic moving silently in the distance. If you forgot to pack food, don't worry. The nearby Joyful Minowa and Bell Port Shioiri shopping streets offer plenty that you can bring to eat on the grass.
The park's yearly seasons and events
Part of Shioiri Park's appeal is its changing seasonal appearance. It may be prettiest in the spring, when its many sakura trees are in bloom. But that's not the only time when the park is colorful. Summer brings the lushest greens, and then comes autumn's vibrant foliage.
The most exciting time to visit Shioiri Park is during the Sumida River Fireworks Festival in July. Japan is famous for its summer firework displays, and this one is known for being the oldest in the country. Fireworks are set off for a full 90 minutes, beautifully lighting up the night sky and TOKYO SKYTREE.
One Tokyo landmark is always visible from the park, regardless of the season or weather. Head to the riverbank after sunset and you'll be able to enjoy a view of TOKYO SKYTREE coming to illuminated life in the fading light.
